OWRFC WW1 Centenary Grave Visit

Chairman’s Welcome

Dear Player/Supporter/Potential Player

If you are new to the rugby club, we welcome you with open arms as you are joining the most friendly club in South London!!  I hope you are able to find all the information you need on this website but if not, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the committee.

I am pleased to report a successful 2013-14 season. The 1st XV had a varied year in a very strong Surrey 1 league. We ultimately finished in a very respectable 3rd position.  The Wanderers struggled slighty in a season where they lost a few old stalwarts to retirement but with some “regeneration” spirits remained high and a mid-table league finish was a good end result for the seaosn.  The Warriors continue to flourish, offering fun, socialble rugby.  Another 7s tour over the summer and training sessions every weekend puts them in goos stead for the 2014-15 season.

The juniors continue to flourish.  A number of successful tours and tournaments have left us with plenty of silverware on show in the bar!  It was fantastic to see a number of players from the first juniors “intake” playing for the senior sides this year.  A sign of exciting times to come.

A number of clubs in our area are struggling with player recruitment and retention – the end result being that they are unable to honour fixtures and, ultimately, have to reduce the number of teams they put out.  Although there is the occasional week when we seem to be short of players we are, on the whole, lucky to not have this problem.  I hope this says something of the “Club Spirit” that is thriving at the Old Whitgiftian Rugby Club. Thank you to all of the players who make this possible.  Of course, more players are always welcome so please do promote the club to friends/family/work colleagues.

SUPPORTERS – we need to encourage our teams to success with all the support we can muster on the touchlines. Don’t worry about the weather – we’ve got tea, coffee, and hot food to keep you warm!

Best Wishes,

Sam Barke
